The Torleiv Hannaas Collection

Torleif Hannaas

The Torleiv Hannaas (1874–1929) collection contains legends, folktales, ballads, folk songs, riddles, proverbs, games, handwritten song books and black books, but also place names, names of people and cattle, and collections of locally used words. The material is mainly from Western Norway and Agder. The collection is often referred to as the Hannaas collection, and contains material collected by Hannaas himself in the period 1895–1929, or sent to him at Bergen Museum's Folklore Collection, where he was director from 1921–1929. It is the oldest part of the Ethno-folkloristic archive at the University of Bergen.

In the early 1970s, Hannaas' collection was divided into two parts. The part that contained mostly place names and collections of locally used words remained at the Nordic Institute, while the folklore collection was moved to the newly created Ethno-folkloristic archive. The collection is digitized in its entirety here. To preserve the history, the material left at the Nordic Institute was given the addition NOR on the archive reference.
