Christmas has long been the most important holiday season of the year. Its celebrations embrace both religious traditions and secular community life. Christmas traditions are rooted in both communal and domestic spaces, bringing together families, friends, and neighbours. We decorate, bake, eat, drink, invite and visit, play and dance – for weeks on end.

The documents in SAMLA contains belief and traditions connected to Christmas from the last centuries from all of Norway. Many of the tradititions are shared across the country, but there are also regional and local customs.

On this page, we have gathered everything that has been registered with Christmas-related keywords. Below, you can browse through the material. You can also choose from the keywords in the menu on the right-hand side of the page.
